What is the California Scholarship Federation?

The California Scholarship Federation, or CSF, started in 1921 by Charles F. Seymour, seeks to recognize students living in California who possess high standards in academic scholarship, community service and citizenship. Students qualifying for the Davis Senior High School chapter are offered various opportunities to serve their community through volunteering their time. Commitment and dedication towards community service may be rewarded by scholarships for graduating seniors.

DHS CSF chapter number: 376N

PTA Newsletter for CSF:

"The California Scholarship Federation (CSF) exists to promote and recognize high standards of scholarship, service and citizenship on the part of students in California schools.  At this time, the approximately 1000 CSF chapters continue to foster the recognition, motivation, and education of academically talented students, and to promote among their chapter memberships the CSF ideal of service to their communities." 'CSF registration opens doors for new semester' - Daisy McKim, Blue Devil HUB

"“CSF’s mission statement is ‘Scholarship for Service’ and the goal is to identify and recognize students at the high school who have excelled in academics, community service and citizenship,” Gill said. “The main goal for the DHS chapter each year is to provide opportunities for the students to be able to give back to our community.”

In the hopes of improving communication between officers and members, Gill created the first comprehensive CSF website. With this new site, each CSF member can view their volunteer status, and keep up to date with new projects and their personal membership."

'New Start for California Scholarship Federation' - Yrenly Yuan, Blue Devil HUB

"“I’d like to learn skills that I can’t in my classes from CSF, but I think that it would take some time out of my life,” Sophomore Jeff Whalen said. [...] O’Brien said students display different levels of commitment, “Of the 300 plus members we have, by the time those members graduate […] only about 20-25 end up fulfilling the active lifetime service requirements, so it really takes a lot of dedication to do it for four semesters.” ...“I hope to gain more leadership skills from CSF because I feel that being involved with it makes you feel like a better person,” sophomore Ankita Singh said."

'CSF registration continues for second week' - Grace Calhoun, Blue Devil HUB

"A line of eager Davis High students spend their lunchtime patiently waiting in the room of Davis High’s social science teacher Fern O’Brien. Why? It’s registration time. For what? The California Scholarship Federation. According to its website, CSF “emphasizes high standards of scholarship and community service for California high school students.” In other words, it’s a community service club. Among Davis High’s students, CSF is consistently one of the most popular clubs on campus.

Junior and year-long member Danielle Gantar joined CSF as a way to make friends and serve in the community, “I love helping out my town and CSF is a great way to do it” Gantar said. Besides being a fun way to log service hours, CSF has credential as being the oldest scholarship institution in California."

'Potential CSF officers learn the tricks of the trade' - Chloe Clouse, Blue Devil HUB

"...However, there will be competition to obtain an officer position. Three club members are running for the public relations position, five for project coordinator, and two for secretary.

“I want to be more actively involved in community service and CSF,” said Amanda Glazer, a sophomore running for secretary.

Sophomore Margaret Lawson feels the same way.

“I want to make a positive impact on my school and my club,” Lawson said.

CSF club members will vote for their preferred officers on March 30, and the elected students will begin to fulfill their new CSF duties the coming semester.

'DHS students make a difference' - Gary Djajapranata, Blue Devil HUB

"...More than eighty people clustered together in P-13 for the Dec. 3 California Scholarship Federation general meeting. As soon as CSF President David Gygi finished speaking, the entire mob of “CSFers” bolted from their seats and charged towards the board, pen in hand, to sign up for new community service projects.

The unfortunate students who found themselves on the outside of the crushing throng were desperate to sign up before all the slots were filled. They urgently screamed to their friends towards the front of the crowd, “Sign me up! Add my name!”

It was so chaotic and crowded that you’d have thought they announced the opening of a new Disneyland ride right there in P-13.

Gygi, a senior and longtime member of CSF, is aware that many of his club’s members commit themselves to community service projects solely for the academic prestige they can gain from colleges by volunteering.

“Kids are under phenomenal stress to produce the best résumé; unfortunately, this attitude is detrimental to the reputation of our club,” Gygi said...."
